Genetic test for predisposition to celiac disease
Celiac disease is an autoimmune pathology towards Gliadina, gluten protein contained in cereals such as wheat, barley and rye: the cells of the immune system activated by exposure to gluten, attack the mucous membrane of the small intestine and cause chronic inflammation, arriving to destroy intestinal villi.
The test analyzes the possible presence of the aplotypes of predisposition to celiac disease (HLA-DQ2 and DQ8). The aplotype is the combination of allean variants on a chromosome, variants strictly associated with each other and which tend to be transmitted in bulk. HLA DQ2/DQ8 Aplotypes are the main genetic risk factor of celiac disease. A negative result for the test ensures the impossibility of developing celiac disease in the course of one’s life. The positivity to the test indicates the patient’s preparation to manifest the disease but does not provide certainty that there is the onset of the same. The presence of this condition is indicative of susceptibility to celiac disease and does not imply the development of the disease, whose diagnosis must be verified through serological tests and clinical diagnosis.
